More than 1.7 million students attended public schools across Georgia, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Elementary grades had the most students, totaling 787,206 (45.9%), with middle school at 388,733 (22.7%) and high school at 539,092 (31.4%).
Data from the Georgia Department of Education indicates that chronic absenteeism continues to affect Georgia’s schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more days in 2024. In response, the GaDOE launched a statewide effort that features a real-time attendance dashboard, a statewide outreach initiative, and targeted support to districts with the greatest need to strengthen attendance rates.
Legislation passed by Georgia lawmakers in 2025 updated school attendance laws, prohibiting expulsions for absenteeism alone. These changes also created new reporting mandates and aligned with diploma programs offering alternative completion routes for students.
As of 2026, the student-to-teacher ratio in Georgia averaged approximately 14:1, outperforming the national ratio average of 15:1.
