Governor Brian Kemp has signed House Bill 208 into law, authorizing the creation of several specialty license plates, including one honoring Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. This new license plate aims to honor the sorority and support community-based programs across Georgia.
Rep. Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain) remarked on the achievement: “This achievement is a celebration of our shared legacy of service.” She expressed gratitude for the teamwork and advocacy that led to this legislative success. Rep. Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale) highlighted the significance of this milestone for sorority members in Georgia, noting that funds from the plate will support their community service initiatives.
Rep. Edna Jackson (D-Savannah) reflected on Delta Sigma Theta’s historical impact, mentioning its involvement in significant movements such as the Women’s Suffrage March in 1913. Rep. Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta) emphasized the importance of HB 208 in honoring public service organizations composed of college-educated women dedicated to social change.
Rep. Terry Cummings (D-Mableton) praised Delta Sigma Theta’s dedication to supporting communities nationwide, while Rep. Mekyah McQueen (D-Smyrna), a newer member of both the legislative body and sorority, expressed inspiration by collective accomplishments.
The license plate will recognize Delta Sigma Theta’s contributions to education, health, and social justice efforts within Georgia and beyond. Proceeds will also fund scholarship and service programs statewide.
