Piedmont Newnan Hospital issued the following announcement on October 19.

Thanks to local and national efforts to raise awareness, the importance of breast health is familiar to many women. For leaders of Piedmont Athens Regional’s Comprehensive Breast Care Program, there is still work to be done to raise awareness and ensure women in Athens and surrounding areas are receiving effective, patient-focused care no matter where they are on their breast health journey.

For many years, Piedmont Athens Regional has offered patients in Northeast Georgia the most all-encompassing breast care with a personal touch. The Comprehensive Breast Care Program, an innovative program led by the Chair of the Breast Center Committee, Cody Gunn, M.D., FACS, and Breast Center manager, Connie Phelps, R.N., offers a quality-focused approach to patient care and reduces mortality for breast cancer patients.

As the only nationally-accredited breast center in the region, the Comprehensive Breast Care Program offers each patient a unique and complete panel of services provided by a team dedicated to achieving positive results for every patient.     

The program focuses on early detection because it is proven to save lives. Piedmont Athens Regional has the most modern screening technology for both routine screening mammograms to more advanced diagnostic services. For every patient diagnosed with breast cancer, the program offers a multidisciplinary case review to ensure expertly coordinated care.

For women with a strong family history of breast cancer, the High-risk Breast Cancer Clinic, started by Dr. Gunn and Heather Wheatley, NP-C, works with women to evaluate their level of risk and develop a plan of action for their future care.
