State Sen. Mike Dugan (R) recently declared his intention to run for the vacant 3rd Congressional District seat, following the announcement of retiring Rep. Drew Ferguson's decision not to seek reelection in December.

In a post made on social media, Dugan said: "I’ve been driven to serve throughout my entire life, and now, more than ever, I’m determined to restore civic responsibility in our federal government. I’m running for Congress, and I’d be honored to have your support."

According to Fox News, Dugan, a Republican from Carrollton, initiated his campaign for Georgia's 3rd Congressional District by filing papers with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to secure campaign contributions. The district encompasses areas from Columbus to Barnesville and Griffin. Fox News further reports that the district is firmly Republican. Dugan has been in office since 2012 and revealed plans to step down from the state senate, triggering a special election for his seat.

Fox News also reports that between 2019 and 2023, Dugan served as the Republican Majority leader but lost his run for president pro tem in 2022. A former Army Ranger and lieutenant colonel who retired in 2008 after over 20 years of service, Dugan joins other Republican contenders for the race including state Rep. David Jenkins of Grantville, an ex-Army helicopter pilot; Jim Bennett of Carroll County; and Michael Corbin, a previous Congressional candidate in Gwinnett County. The congressional primary is scheduled for May 21; a possible Republican nomination runoff on June 18; and the general election currently slated for November 5.
