A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Coweta County Election Department on February 5, 2025. The request was made by NC Georgia News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The request asked for records under the Georgia Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq., specifically for a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election. The requested information includes the candidates' first, middle, and last names, the office they are running for, their jurisdiction of office, and their party affiliation.
Additionally, NC Georgia News also requested contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization, we at NC Georgia News believe that access to public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we have requested a fee waiver as a media professional.
We are awaiting response from the Coweta County Election Department regarding this request.
