A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Meriwether County Election Department regarding the upcoming spring election candidates on February 5, 2025. The request was made by NC Georgia News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The request specifically asked for a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election under the Georgia Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq. The requested information includes each candidate's first, middle, and last name; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; party affiliation; and contact information including address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization, we at NC Georgia News rely heavily on access to public records to fulfill our professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. We believe that as a media professional disseminating information to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver for this request.
We await a response from the Meriwether County Election Department and will continue our efforts in ensuring transparency in local government affairs.
